FAQs
What can I expect in my psychiatric intake appointment?
A psychiatric intake, or initial evaluation, can include a review of symptoms, your psychiatric and medical histories, family history, as well as getting to know each other in a general sense. It can also include a diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, discussion of therapy, and how medications may be used as part of your treatment.
I have already tried many different psychiatric medications. Why should I still seek help?
This is a common situation, and often comes down to an incorrect diagnosis, and therefore not using medications correctly. We will work together to get a better understanding of your diagnosis(es) before deciding if medication is appropriate. Another common scenario is that medications are under-dosed, or used in combinations that make them less effective. In short, while you may believe you are treatment-resistant, there is a good chance that you may benefit from help.
Do you offer medication management or therapy?
I offer both medication management and therapy services, though I stress that even in a brief “med check” appointment, there is always room for the therapeutic process to add to treatment. As a psychiatrist, I do not always believe these two should be separated.
How often do I need to have an appointment?
This varies, especially if someone is sicker or having more acute issues, in which case they may need to be seen more frequently. As a rule, I require that all patients be seen at least once every three months, but many patients opt for more regular visits, such as every other week or monthly.
What insurances do you accept?
I do not contract directly with any insurance companies at this time. However, I am able to provide you with a ‘superbill’ for your appointments, that you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance company.
Do you offer a sliding scale for appointment fees?
I am not able to offer a sliding scale for appointment fees at this time.
